Wholesale Internet
 Bandwidth

Wholesale Bandwidth is bandwidth sold to other ISPs, which are then resold to end users.  The best way to explain wholesale bandwidth is like Sam or Costco Stores, which buy all their products in large bulk.  Because they buy in large bulk, they can buy items at  lower prices.  It is the same concept as wholesale bandwidth, companies buy large amounts of bandwidth, and then they resell it.

If your company is considering purchasing wholesale bandwidth, we have compiled a few guidelines to help you choose a service provider.

A Top Quality Internet Network:

Find out about their Internet network connection size and network details.  You should be looking for someone with a worldwide Tier 1 International OC192 backbone with additional 10 GigE network connections to hundreds of other Internet networks.

Choose a State-of-the Art Facility:

If you are reselling bandwidth, you will want a facility that offers super fast connections to the Internet.  You will need Redundant UPS and a prime source type of generator backed up to make sure you are protected during electrical outages.  Also, you will need Redundant A/C Systems and 24/7 on-site technical support and physical security.  It is wise to chose a provider that offers 24/7 on-site technical support, and they need to have technical staff around the clock.

Does the Provider Include Remote Hands for Free:

You want to find a provider that provides remote hands service.  If you are looking at a quality provider, they should include this service.  These providers often have faster, more experienced technical service personnel, who will be there 24/7 and when you need them the most.

How Long has the Provider been in Business:

Try to find a company that has survived the dot.com bust and has proven itself over time, which translates to experience and stability in the company.  Look for a provider that has been in business for over 10 years.  A provider that is financially profitable and stable will cause you less headache, and you won’t have to worry about a forced move because of bankruptcy.  Find a provider that has been profitable for many years.

Does the Provider have extra Monthly Fees:

Extra charges can add up fast, and most quality providers will not charge you.  Such things as cross connects and IP addresses are just a few things to watch out for.

What size of Internet Connections does the Provider Utilize:

An OC192 offers the best connection available.  Look for a provider that offers you the connectivity and redundancy for fast delivery.  Make sure that the facility can deliver the technical support and security that your business needs.

Consider the Cost of Internet Bandwidth Upgrades:

Research the pricing for future upgrades with various providers to know how you will be charged for additional Internet bandwidth as you grow.  A profitable provider is going to handle upgrades fairly.  Ask how much it cost for 100Mbps and 1,000Mbps Internet bandwidth .

Does the Provider offer Multiple Locations Around the World:

It is not necessary to have multiple locations, however, multiple locations have a stronger backbone and can offer you global opportunities as your business grows.

Ask the Provider for a List of Some of Their Customers:

By asking for a list of customers, it will help ensure you that you are making the right choice.  You will be able to find out their technical reliability; and if they have customers who have brand names, it’s a good sign.

Doing your research when you are buying wholesale bandwidth will save you time, money, extra stress and headaches.
