Top Tier 1 Internet
Backbones for Wholesale
Internet Transit
There
is some debate about
what constitutes a
Tier 1 Internet Backbone.
One definition is that a
provider does not purchase
IP transit from any other
network to reach any other
portion of the Internet. To
become a Tier 1 Internet Backbone, a network must
peer with every other Tier 1
network. Another definition
is that it doesn't have to pay
any other provider for
transit of its traffic,
peering excluded.
Typically, Tier 1 Internet
Backbone tries to protect
their status by preventing
new networks from becoming
Tier 1's. They do this by
setting "peering
requirements," which are too
high for new networks to
meet.
Today,
Tier 1 Internet Backbones
are a collection of optical
fiber, high-speed routers,
laser transmitters and
receivers and sophisticated
switches that keep the
Internet voice, and video and
data bloodstream coursing
across the globe.
Some of the major Tier 1
Internet Transit
providers are UUnet, Sprint
Corp, AT&T Corp, Genuity
Inc., Cable & Wireless,
Broadwing and several
others, including Qwest,
Level3 , William
Communications and Hurricane
Electric.
Most Tier 1 Internet
Transit providers
maintain networks capable of
OC-12-622 megabits per
second speeds or better
between major regional
points on their networks. Tier
1 Internet Backbone
providers usually maintain
24/7/365 network operation
centers for customers, have
multiple locations in major
regional centers, and have
some type of
Redundant UPS
and AC.
Redundant
service should also be
included in a facility. If
one connection goes down,
traffic is re-routed through
another backbone provider.
The bottom line,
you are entrusting
your files and databases to
a colocation data center.
Therefore, these facilities
should be of the highest
quality. Utilizing a colocation data center with
a Tier 1 Internet Backbone
usually means a
state-of-the-art facility.
