What is Internet Bandwidth?

Internet Bandwidth or transit in simple terms, is the transmission speed or throughput of your connection to the Internet.  A simple analogy of this is like water flowing though a pipe, the bigger the pipe, the more water can flow though it. Bandwidth is like the pipe, the more bandwidth, the more data can pass though it.

To understand Internet bandwidth, you first have to understand how the Internet works.  The Internet is built by network of networks that connect to major points on a worldwide grid that enables traffic to properly get to its destination. The amount of bandwidth a hosting company can provide is determined by their network connections, both internal to their data center and external to the public Internet.  Colocation facilities or Internet data centers can offer reliability plus the fastest delivery of all your data.  Colocation facilities are equipped with capabilities far surpassing what a company could do on its own premises.

The colocation facility has large amounts of bandwidth, which allows companies to access far more bandwidth than it could ever do on its own. This offers your company fast Internet connections for all your web sites and other Internet services.  Also, they offer redundant UPS, which is backup power even when there are power outages in a city and redundant AC. They offer 24/7 onsite technical support, and 24/7 physical security. All these services should be included in a data center.  If your business did all of these tasks, it would cost around $20,000 per month.  By using a colocation facility, the price would be around $1,000 per month or less.

How Much Internet Bandwidth?

It depends, don’t you hate that answer?  Since bandwidth is a significant factor of hosting plan prices, you should take the time to figure how much bandwidth you need. Also, most companies charge by the month, so you will have to estimate how much bandwidth per month.  The following will help you in determining how much bandwidth you will require.

Average Daily Visitors:  On the average, how many people do you expect to visit your site per day?  This number could be one to one million.

Average Page View:  On the average, how many pages do you expect a person to view?  For example, you might have 100 pages but maybe only 10 will be viewed each time they visit.

Average Page Size:  What is the average size of your web pages, in Kilobytes (KB)?

Average Daily File Downloads: The numbers of downloads you expect per day. You have to take into consideration the number of visitors and how many times a visitor downloads a file, on average, per day.

Average File Size- Average file size of files that are downloadable.

Fudge Factor - This number should be greater than one.  A good number to use is 1.5, which means your estimate is off by 50 percent.  If you are very unsure, you could use 2 or 3 to ensure that your bandwidth requirements are met.

Most hosting plans offer bandwidth in Gigabytes per month.  So your formula would be the following:

Average Daily Visitors x Average Pages Viewed x Average Page Size + Average Daily File Downloads x Average File Size x 31 x Fudge Factor.

Your hosting or colocation company will also offer you assistance in figuring how much bandwidth you will need.
