What is a Gigabit of
Internet Bandwidth?
A Gigabit
of Internet bandwidth
(not to be confused with a
Gigabyte or a Gigabit of data)
is 1,000Mbps if Internet
bandwidth and is most often
delivered over a 1000 Base T
Ethernet or over 10GigE 10,000
Mbps Internet port.
Gigabit Ethernet is a
high-speed form of Ethernet,
which is a local area
network technology that can
provide data transfer rates
of about one gigabit per
second. Gigabits per second
is usually shortened to Gbps.
The gigabit is not used in
data transmission rates, as
most devices push
information at slower
kilobytes and megabyte
speed except in fiber optic
cable. As technology
advances and data
transmission rates increase,
the average computer user
will no doubt become familiar
with the gigabit.
On the other
hand, a Gigabit of data is a
unit of measurement used in
computers, equal to one
billion bits of data. A bit
is the smallest unit of data,
and it takes eight bits to
store a single character of
text. In the world of
computers, you will normally
indicate in bytes rather
than bits. You don’t usually
hear someone describe a
200-gigabyte drive as being
1,600 gigabits. Gigabits are
typically used to describe
data transfer rates, or how
fast information can move
between devices such as
modems.
Some
sources define a gigabit to
mean 1,073,741,824 bits.
Although the bit is a unit
of the binary number system,
bits in data communications
are mingled signal pulses
and have been counted using
the decimal number system. A
good example of this is 28.8
kilobits per second (Kpbs)
is 28,800 bits per second.
Because of how the computer
is set up and memory address
boundaries, bytes are always
some multiple or exponent of
two.
