10 GigE Internet Bandwidth

The market for 10 gigabit-per-second Ethernet got off on a slow start, but with more corporate customers looking for more speed on their networks, the business is picking up.

Today, use of the 10 GigE users are with highly specialized needs.  Some of the users today are the media companies that need to move a lot of large files, firms looking to back up server farms using a D2D strategy, and a few users looking for a very high bandwidth path between servers. The reason for its slow start is because servers of today are not 10 GigE ready, although adapters are available.  Another key element in 10 GigE’s adoption is cabling.  The early versions relied on fiber cable, however, 10 GigE can use copper cabling.  Cat 5e's unshielded twisted pair can be used over a distance of about 180 feet.  Augmented Cat 6 and regular Cat 7 shield twisted pairs work for up to 300 feet.  Meanwhile, optical cable connections can reach up to 25 miles compared to three miles for GigE.

With the demands picking up and with the use of copper cable, the arrival of 10 GigE is growing fast and the prices are falling, which spur more corporations to look at GigE.  It promises to leapfrog current technology in much the same way that 1-Gigabit Ethernet replaced the older fast Ethernet.  But the impact on the 10 GigE can be even more profound in the long run, as it offers a one-size-fits-all technology for IT applications from supercomputing to networked storage.

The 10GigE is front and center debate over computer clustering.  It has emerged as a leading contender for the high-speed links that connect groups of computers into a single machine.  It is also making headway in storage systems, where it could be a potential replacement for Fibre Channel switches.  Engineers are attracted by the idea of using one technology to perform several tasks, which can reduce training cost.
